Homeowner Claim Checklist

At SCF Solutions in Charleston, SC, we are in the business of helping our clients have peace of mind when dealing with the perils of life. We understand how overwhelming circumstances can be when you have a homeowners insurance claim. Whether a severe storm has hit your home, causing significant damage, a barbeque grill incident has injured a visitor, an intruder has broken into your home, or many other unfortunate situations have occurred, and you need to file an insurance claim to get things back in order. Assisting with this is our specialty. So, what is your responsibility when a claim occurs so we can get the ball rolling and get you and your family the help you deserve?

Steps to Take When Starting a Homeowner Claim

After an incident where a claim needs to be filed, here are the steps to take to get you going:

  • If a crime was committed, report it to law enforcement immediately. After a break-in or your home has been vandalized, you would need to give them the details of the incident. Your insurer will use their report when determining the outcome of your claim.
  • Call your insurance agent. Ask your agent if you are covered, how long you have to file a claim, if you have a deductible to pay, and if so, how much. You can also ask how long the process will take and if you need to get estimates for repairs in the meantime.
  • Return any claims forms to the agency promptly. This will help you avoid possible delays in the process, which could greatly inconvenience you and your family.
  • Be available to talk to a claim adjuster. The sooner your inspector can assess the damage, the quicker your claim can be processed. Provide the adjusters with any videotape or pictures of the damage.
  • Protect your property from additional damage. Make any quick, temporary repairs needed to secure your residence, such as boarding up windows and doors. Save your receipts for reimbursement.
  • Develop a list of damaged items. Before an incident occurs, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have an itemized list of home appliances and electronics that you can use for an inventory checklist later. Keep the list in a fireproof safe or other safe place.
  • Keep any receipts from accommodations you needed to make for lodging, food, fuel, or pet boarding while you were unable to stay in your residence.
